Course Overview

This one-day course introduces participants to laser dentistry, focusing on the safe and effective use of Waterlase (Er,Cr:YSGG all-tissue laser) and Epic X(diode laser). Through concise lectures and hands-on training, participants will learn laser-tissue interactions, safety protocols, and clinical applications.
A practical workshop using pig heads will provide hands-on experience with gingival depigmentation and crown lengthening. The course emphasizes minimally invasive techniques, patient comfort, and practical integration into dental practice.

9:00 – 10:30 Lecture 1 – Fundamentals of Laser Dentistry

Topics:

- Basics of laser physics and tissue interaction (absorption, photothermal
effects).
— Laser safety: eye protection, plume management, and patient safety.
Waterlase vs. Epic X:
— All-tissue laser for hard (enamel, dentin, bone) and soft tissue procedures;
uses hydrokinetic cutting with water spray for precision and reduced heat. Ideal
for cavity preparation, osseous surgery, and minimally invasive procedures.
— Epic X: Soft tissue laser for cutting, coagulation, and bacterial reduction;
compact, cost-effective, but limited to soft tissue applications like gingivectomy
and frenectomy.
— Clinical advantages, limitations, and patient benefits of each laser.

11:00 – 12:30 Lecture 2 – Clinical Applications of Dental Lasers

Topics:

- Soft tissue procedures: gingivectomy, frenectomy, and biopsy.
- Hard tissue procedures (Waterlase): cavity preparation and osseous surgery.
- Additional applications: bacterial reduction, photobiomodulation (PBM) for
pain relief, and periodontal therapy.
- Practice integration: patient communication, billing, and workflow
optimization.

13:30 – 16:00 Live Session Hands-On Workshop – Laser Techniques on Pig Heads

Setup:
Participants work in pairs at workstations equipped with Waterlase and Epic X
lasers, using pig heads as a realistic model for soft and hard tissue procedures.
